TERMS:            Three year terms.  Terms expire September 30 of corresponding year.

MEMBERS:        Nine.

MEETINGS:        Quarterly, usually the 3rd Wednesday of February/May/August/November.

Human Relations Offices, 947 New Hampshire.

 

FUNCTION:

This Commission works to eliminate discrimination in employment, public accommodations, and housing by accepting investigating, ruling upon, and resolving complaints locally; monitors with City’s employment practices for compliance with its own affirmative action program; and monitors and encourages compliance with affirmative action and equal employment opportunity in public contracts by contractors, vendors and suppliers who do business with the City.

 

Some of the activities include:

a)   to study the problem of discrimination of any other matter which may have an adverse impact on community relations;

b)   to promote good will and cooperation among diverse ethnic groups and other elements of the population of Lawrence;

c)   to solicit, receive, and accept funding for programs.
