City of Lawrence

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING DIVISION

MEMORANDUM

TO:              Charles Soules, Director of Public Works

FROM:         David Woosley, Transportation/Traffic Engineer

DATE:           4 January 2007

SUBJECT:     Traffic Safety Commission, November 6, 2006

9th Street/8th Street between Lawrence Avenue and Kasold Drive

At the November 6, 2006, Traffic Safety Commission meeting, the commission heard a request to construct TRAFFIC CALMING DEVICES on 9th Street/8th Street between Lawrence Avenue and Kasold Drive, due to the speed of traffic and crashes in the area.  Traffic data collected showed that the area met or exceeded the city’s minimum criteria for consideration of traffic calming devices.  The commission unanimously approved the request, 8-0.

Based on the speed and volume of traffic, crash history, sidewalks, school crossings and pedestrian generators, this project would rank No. 8 on the city’s list (see attached list) of approved traffic calming projects, if approved by the city commission.  An actual plan will not be developed until funding is available and staff has conducted neighborhood meetings, however, it is anticipated that approximately six devices will be required at an estimated cost of $125,000.
