RE:

Project No. PW1429 – 2014 Roof for Salt Dome at 1120 Haskell – City Bid No. B1450

Please include the following item on the City Commission consent agenda for consideration at the October 14, 2014 meeting:

Project Description

The City of Lawrence received bid proposals for the replacement of the roof on a salt dome located at 1140 Haskell, behind the Street Division office building.

Project History

The Street Division has two salt domes used to store salt for winter snow operations. The commission approved $40,000 in the general fund as part of the 2014 budget to replace the roof on the older of the two salt domes. Recently, during the 2015 budget process, a request to fund the second salt dome roof replacement was deferred.

The older salt dome was built in 1995. It is 72 foot in diameter. The roof has a much deteriorated condition.  It holds approximately 5,000 tons of salt. If the salt gets wet it “activates” meaning when needed for snow and ice control – it will not be as effective in treating ice. The average cost for salt is $55.00 per ton.

Summary of bids received

Industrial Roofing

NO Bid

Kaw Roofing and Sheet Metal

$ 70,660.00

Delta Innovative Services

$ 54,000.00

Recommendation

Based on the condition of the roof, we are recommending moving forward with this project. The low bid was $14,000 over our estimate for this project. We believe the overage is due mostly to the condition of the roof and the roof structure. Additional funds will come from the Capital Improvement Reserve Fund.

Action Request

Award Bid #1450 for Roof replacement of the Salt Dome located at 1120 Haskell in the amount of $54,000 to Delta Innovative Services.
