RE: |
2015 Light the Night Leukemia Walk – Saturday, September 12, 2015 |
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society have applied for a street event permit for the 2015 Light the Night Leukemia Walk on Saturday, September 12, 2015, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., benefitting Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The walk would begin at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Massachusetts Street adjacent to South Park. Participants would walk north on Massachusetts Street to 11th Street, then west to Vermont Street, then north on Vermont Street to 9th Street, then east to New Hampshire Street, then south on New Hampshire Street to 11th Street, then west to Massachusetts Street, then south on Massachusetts Street back to South Park (see attached map). The walkers will be in one group and have police escort in front and behind, only having to close intersections as they pass through. It is anticipated that the entire route will take one hour.
Also on this same date the Lawrence / Douglas County Fire Medical Department will have the 200 block of west 8th Street closed from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for their open house celebration. This event will be concluded and 8th street will be back open prior to the Light the Night Walk.
This date is also a KU home football game (band day and family day). The KU band day parade will be over at approximately 2:00 p.m. and the game start time is 6:00 p.m. Staff feels that this route will have little to no impact on game day traffic downtown. The police department has coordinated traffic control for similar routes downtown and has developed a plan that requires little to no police resources for traffic control. All barricades and staff will be solely provided by the applicant.
ACTION
Approve a street event permit for use of various rolling street closures for The 2015 Light the Night Leukemia Walk – Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
