KNOX-BOX Security Program

The International Fire Code Section 506 Key Boxes, requires the use of key boxes “where access to or within a structure or area is restricted because of secured openings or where immediate access is necessary for life-saving or firefighting purposes”.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Department has a Knox Security Program regulated by Standard Operating Procedure 302.20. Proper location of Knox security devices assists crews with rapid entry into secured areas while reducing or eliminating damage to property.

Knox FDC Caps

New or remodeled structures will be required to utilize Knox locking caps to protect the FDC for auto sprinkler and standpipe systems. These caps will protect the FDC threads and swivels from accidental damage and remove the ability of persons to vandalize the FDC by placing debris in the intakes.
