Telecommunications systems

Information Technology is responsible for providing cost effective telephone, data, and messaging service to City of Lawrence employees within 13 departments. Included within the voice network are three CBX systems with 300 extensions, leased Centrex service for outlying buildings consisting of 300 extensions, and 15 smaller phone systems each with less than 20 extensions. All systems are integrated to form a single virtual telecommunications system for the City of Lawrence. This integration of multiple telephone systems allows employees to access and transfer calls to any City of Lawrence location using four-digit dialing. Additionally, direct access dialing permits outside callers to connect directly with most employees rather than being transferred from the switchboard.

Three voice mail messaging systems are used containing a total of 200 voice mailboxes. Employees are able to receive messages 24 hours a day seven days a week. During the voice mail greeting the caller may press ‘0’ at any time to reach a live attendant in lieu of leaving a voicemail message. Please contact (785) 832-3322 to report any problems in using voice mail systems.

The voice mail system is also used to provide the public with informative applications such as the pothole information line (785) 832-3456, the Job information line (785) 832-3333, and the Utility Billing information line (785) 832-3256. Please call 832-3322 to suggest new information line applications.
