The City of Lawrence Winter Emergency Shelter will close for the season after the overnight on Tuesday, March 1.

The Winter Emergency Shelter, located at the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., provides non-congregate overnight shelter when the overnight temperature is 35 degrees or below. The patrons of the program have been notified about it ending.

Since November 1, 2021, there have been approximately 2,100 unique stays by nearly 200 people, varying nightly from a handful to more than 55 people having a safe, secure night’s rest at the shelter.

“We want to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers that donated their time and those individuals and businesses that donated supplies for the Winter Emergency Shelter,” said Mitch Young, park district supervisor and City houseless liaison. “We live in a community that not only says it cares but shows it through action. When the shelter was put together in quick fashion, we had many members of the community step up and pitch in, ensuring those in need in our community were taken in an provided a safe, warm place out of the elements. We can’t give enough thanks for their investment in our community.”

Through March 1, 2022, the winter emergency shelter will offer a warm, safe environment when the daily overnight temperature posted on the Lawrence Journal-World website is at or below 35 degrees. On those nights, the shelter will open from 8 p.m. through 7 a.m. the following morning.
