About Us

The City of Lawrence Waste Reduction and Recycling Division is part of the Solid Waste Division. Programs and operations are funded through solid waste fees for residential and commercial services. The Division's objective is to facilitate and promote the reduction of materials from the waste stream.

 

In 2007, the City achieved a 35 percent recycling rate which is higher than the state and national averages.

 

Over the years the Division has implemented the following programs and services:

- Yard Waste Collection and Composting Program

- Cardboard and Office Paper Recycling Program for Businesses

- Community Drop-Off Recycling Bins for Newspaper, Cardboard, and Mixed Paper

- Environmental Procurement Policy for the City of Lawrence

- Hazardous Waste Disposal for Households and Qualified Small Businesses

- Product Reuse Program

- Earth Day Parade and Celebration

- Lawrence Energy Conservation Fair and Sustainable Homes Tour

- Electronic Recycling Collection Events

- Community Group and School Presentations

 

The Waste Reduction and Recycling Division also serves as a central point for information regarding community recycling information: curbside recycling providers, recycling centers in Lawrence, used oil drop off sites and more.
