The City of Lawrence celebrates Earth Day 2017 with a day of activities. The 17th Annual Earth Day Celebration in South Park, hosted by the city’s Solid Waste Division, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22nd. The day starts with a parade, hosted by KU Environs, at 11:00 a.m. on Massachusetts Street from Seventh Street to South Park. Admission is free and open to the public. In case of severe weather, the event will be cancelled. There is no rain date for this event.
The celebration in the park features over sixty exhibitors, including the Recycle Cycle, activities for the whole family, local food vendors and live music. The purpose of the Earth Day Celebration is to gather community members to connect, discover, and celebrate local organizations and businesses who support a healthy, sustainable environment. Information on hand will include waste reduction and recycling tips, benefits of composting and gardening, how to conserve energy at home and work, native grassland preservation and more.
Experience free yoga classes in the park, provided by OmTree Shala and check out the Monkey Bridge Maze, an obstacle course that teaches children about habitat preservation.
Celebration attendees are encouraged to walk, bike, or ride the bus to South Park. The Lawrence/Douglas County Health Department will provide a free bike valet for all those who bike to the park! The Lawrence Transit System is offering free rides on the T all day on Saturday, April 22nd.
