City announces Thanksgiving holiday closures; service alterations

City offices will be closed Thursday, November 23, and Friday, November 24, during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. City services, solid waste collection, and hours for parks and recreation facilities or programs will be altered as shown below:

Solid Waste Collection:  There will be no trash, recycling, or yard waste collection service on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23rd. Collection service will be delayed by one day for Thursday and Friday residential customers. Thursday routes will be completed on Friday, November 24th and Friday routes will be completed on Saturday, November 25th. There will be no collection service changes for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday customers. For additional information, contact the Solid Waste Division at 832-3032.

Parking: Parking at meters in downtown Lawrence will be free on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 23-24. Saturday shoppers will need to pay to park during regular hours from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Transit: There will be no public transit service on Thanksgiving Day, November, 23. Both fixed-route and paratransit buses will not operate. Service will resume on Friday, Nov. 24.

Parks and Recreation Department

Recreation Centers:  East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St., the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St. and Sports Pavilion Lawrence, 100 Rock Chalk Lane, will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22. All centers will remain closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 23.

Sports Pavilion Lawrence will re-open 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, while East Lawrence Recreation Center, Holcom Park Recreation Center and the Community Building will re-open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. All offices at each facility will be closed. Since there are no classes or sports scheduled, open gym will be available at all centers while open. The centers will resume normal operating hours on Saturday, Nov. 25. The Administrative Office in South Park will be closed Thursday-Friday, Nov. 23-24 and will reopen 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27.

Special Populations: There are two programs scheduled during the Thanksgiving week – Acting 101 will be held 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at the Carnegie Building, 200 W. 9th St., and Wheelchair Basketball will be held 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the East Lawrence Recreation Center. Adult Sports:  There are no programs or league play scheduled for Wednesday-Sunday, Nov. 22-26. Programs will resume on Monday, Nov. 27.  For more information, please contact Josh Maike, adult sports supervisor, at (785) 832-7920.

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be closed Thanksgiving and will open 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 24, with normal operating hours. For more information, please contact the nature center at (785) 832-7980.

Aquatic Division:  Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will hold the following hours:
Wednesday, Nov. 22
Lap Swimming – 5:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Warm Water Workout – 8 a.m. -10 a.m.
Zero Depth and Children’s Area – 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Waterslide and Diving Area – 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The center will be closed Thursday, Nov. 23.  It will reopen on Friday, Nov. 24, with holiday hours. The Competitive Pool will be open from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. for lap swimming and the Zero Depth and Children’s Area will be open from 1-8 p.m. The Waterslide and Diving Area will be open from 1-7:45 p.m. The Aquatic Administrative office will be closed.

The pool will resume its regular operating hours on Saturday, Nov. 26. Regular hours are the following:

Lap Swimming
Monday through Friday – 5:15 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday – 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday – 1 to 6 p.m.
Waterslide and Diving Area
Monday – Friday – 6 to 7:45 p.m.
Saturday – 1 to 7:45 p.m.
Sunday – 1 to 5:45 p.m.

Warm Water Workout will take place daily, Monday through Friday, from 12 to 4 p.m.

Zero Depth and Children’s Area
Monday – Friday – 4- 8 p.m.
Saturday – 1 – 8 p.m.
Sunday – 1 – 6 p.m.

Carl Knox Natatorium, located on the campus of Lawrence High School, will be closed Monday through Thursday, Nov. 20-23. It will reopen on Monday, Nov. 27, at its regular operating hours, Monday through Thursday, 6:15- 8:30 p.m. Carl Knox Natatorium is closed Friday through Sunday.

Lifelong Recreation: There are no classes meeting during the holiday.

Special Events:  There are no Special Events planned during the week of Thanksgiving.

Youth Sports: There are no Parks and Recreation youth basketball practices scheduled Wednesday-Saturday, Nov. 22-25. Hoopster league games begin Monday, Nov. 27. Eagle Bend Golf Course: Closed on Thanksgiving and will open 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 24. Eagle Bend accepts tee times up to a week in advance. Open from 9:30 a.m. to dusk.
