Holcom Park Recreation Center closure extended

Kevin PowellCity, Parks & Recreation

Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St., will be closed an additional four days through Thursday, Jan. 18, to allow for the proper curing of the gymnasium floor.

The recreation center has been closed since Monday, Jan. 8, to refinish the gym floor.  The oil-based finisher used on the floor requires additional time to cure, or completely set, which will allow the floor to withstand heavy use and foot traffic.  The process also produces an unpleasant odor that would be very noticeable to patrons.  All programs and activities have been relocated to other facilities throughout the week and all participants have been notified of specific class relocations.

The center’s weight/cardio and game rooms and reception area, including enrollment assistance will reopen 7 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19.  The gymnasium will reopen on Sunday, Jan. 21, for scheduled activities.

All other recreation facilities will remain open throughout the week at their scheduled hours of operation, which can be found on the department’s website, www.lprd.org. This includes: East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.; the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, Carl Knox Natatorium located on the Lawrence High School campus, 1901 Louisiana St. and Sports Pavilion Lawrence, 100 Rock Chalk Lane.
