Second Public Meeting to be held on proposed changes to decoration regulations at public cemeteries

Kevin PowellCity, Parks & Recreation

Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department will hold a second public meeting to receive feedback on the cemetery rules and regulations as it pertains to decoration at the City cemeteries.  The meeting will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. Second St.

Parks and Recreation staff held a meeting last week to discuss the current rules and share proposed changes to the section devoted to decorations. The section of the rules and regulations detail all acceptable forms of flowers and decorations allowed on gravesites, as well as providing the length of time flowers and decorations will remain before being removed by Parks and Recreation staff. The regulations also provide a listing of items that are not acceptable for gravesites and provides where acceptable decorations are to be placed next to monuments.

The proposed changes will also be discussed at tonight’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office, 1141 Massachusetts St., and will also be discussed at the October advisory board meeting for final comments received from the second public meeting.
