LPRD accepting comments ahead of second public meeting on cemetery decorations

Kevin PowellCity, Parks & Recreation

Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department continues to accept feedback on its proposed changes to grave decorations at its public cemeteries.

Public comment can be provided online at: https://lawrenceks.org/lprd/publicforum/. Comments are also accepted by email at parksrec@lawrenceks.org, stopping in at the Parks and Recreation Administrative Offices in South Park, 1141, Massachusetts St. or by calling (785) 832-3450.

A second public meeting will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. Second St., to discuss the cemetery rules and regulations as it pertains to decoration at the City cemeteries.

Parks and Recreation staff held a meeting in early-September to discuss the current rules and share proposed changes to the section devoted to decorations. The section of the rules and regulations detail all acceptable forms of flowers and decorations allowed on gravesites, as well as providing the length of time flowers and decorations will remain before being removed by Parks and Recreation staff. The regulations also provide a listing of items that are not acceptable for gravesites and provides where acceptable decorations are to be placed next to monuments.

The proposed changes were also discussed at the  Parks and Recreation Advisory Board September board meeting, and will be revisited at the October board meeting, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office, 1141 Massachusetts St.
