City offering class on composting

Kevin PowellCity, Solid Waste

On Thursday, March 7, the City of Lawrence Solid Waste Division will host a one-hour educational class on composting from noon to 1 p.m. at the Solid Waste Annex North facility located at 320 NE Industrial Lane. The goal of this class is to provide attendees with enough basic knowledge on composting to begin a project on their own. It will cover both backyard composting and vermicomposting (with worms). The class is free and open to the public, but there is limited space available. To enroll, complete the online class registration form.

Composting at home is the best way to recycle residential organic waste into an ideal material for improving lawn and garden soils. Compost adds essential nutrients and organic matter to the soil, while also building soil structure by loosening the soil for better root penetration and improving the soil’s capacity to hold water.
