City of Lawrence working with Aqua Backflow, Inc. for Cross Connection Control Program

Kevin PowellCity, Municipal Services and Operations

The City of Lawrence is prioritizing administration and enforcement of its Cross Connection Control Program and has contracted with Aqua Backflow, Inc., a national firm specializing in cross connection control management, to provide enhanced administration.

The Cross Connection Control Program is designed to comply with state and national regulations to protect the potable water supply from contamination. All community water providers are mandated by State of Kansas Administrative Regulations and the Kansas Department of Health & Environment to enforce a Cross Connection Control Program designed to protect public health and the public water supply. Specific regulations for the program are found in City of Lawrence Municipal Code Chapter 19 Article 7.

Aqua Backflow will send correspondence to commercial and residential backflow owners in regard to their Cross Connection Control Program requirements. Letters may be for annual backflow prevention assembly tests that are due, or for other program related items. Regardless of whether Aqua Backflow is in touch directly about the Cross Connection Control Program, City of Lawrence Municipal Code requires that backflow prevention assemblies be tested upon installation or repair, as well as on an annual basis. Anyone with a backflow prevention assembly that is not currently being tested annually is in violation of City Code.

Water customers who own backflow prevention assemblies must contract with a registered and certified tester to perform the annual tests. Any required installations should be performed by a licensed contractor. There are costs associated with program administration as well as testing and maintaining backflow prevention assemblies, and these costs are the responsibility of the owner of the backflow prevention assembly.

The City of Lawrence appreciates all cooperation with Aqua Backflow regarding requests for information and backflow assembly compliance. If there are any questions related to the Cross Connection Control Program, please contact Aqua Backflow at 847-742-2296 or City of Lawrence Municipal Services and Operations at 785-832-7800.
