Water bypass at Pump Station 9

Kevin PowellCity

With the extraordinary wet weather conditions and severe thunderstorms from this past weekend, water levels in the storage basins and the sanitary sewer pumps at Pump Station 9  reached maximum capacity while the levels on the wet well also continued rising.

To prevent water backing up into the sanitary sewer collection system upstream of Pump Station 9, starting at approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday, staff prepared to open the bypass gate into Brush Creek. Staff posted signs near the walking trails and downstream of the release point. At 9:06 p.m. Sunday, the bypass gate was opened to allow controlled bypass into Brush Creek.

The bypass was stopped at approximately 12:20 p.m. today.

City staff has monitored the water quality in Brush Creek throughout the event consistent with Kansas Department of Health and Environment protocol.

Updates will be posted as necessary.
