Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission announces 2019 Phoenix Award recipients

The Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2019 Phoenix Awards. The Phoenix Awards recognize outstanding artistic achievements in the Lawrence community. There are 10 categories for five awards: Arts Advocate, Arts Administrator, Arts Education, Design Arts, Literary Arts, Musical Arts, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Volunteer in the Arts, and the Phoenix Award for Exceptional Artistic Achievement. There is also a “Creative Spaces” Award category, which recognizes outstanding achievement in imaginative and environmentally forward-thinking place-making.

This year, the Cultural Arts Commission named the following five awardees in their respective categories:

  • Roger Shimomura, awardee for visual arts-painting and arts educator
  • Dan Rockhill, awardee for architecture/creative spaces
  • Jancita Warrington, awardee for arts and culture educator
  • Lisa Grossman, awardee for visual arts-painting
  • Clenece Hills, awardee for arts volunteer

The Cultural Arts Commission received many qualified nominations for this year’s awards and was honored to select these five individuals as exemplary representations of the Lawrence arts community.

The Phoenix Awards will be presented at the 2019 Phoenix Awards reception and ceremony, which will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 27 at Theatre Lawrence. The event is free and all are welcome to attend.

All  of this year’s awardees will receive awards created by Jennifer Joie Webster and Walt Hull (pictured below).
