City announces Thanksgiving holiday closures, service alterations

City offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Solid Waste Collection: There will be no trash, recycling, or yard waste collection service on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28. Collection service will be delayed by one day for Thursday and Friday residential customers. Thursday routes will be completed on Friday, Nov. 29 and Friday routes will be completed on Saturday, Nov. 30. There will be no collection service changes for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday customers. There will be no roll-off service on Thursday, Nov. 28 or Friday, Nov. 29. Roll-off service resumes on Monday, Dec. 2. For additional information, contact the Solid Waste Division at 785-832-3032.

Household Hazardous Waste Facility: The Household Hazardous Waste Facility will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28. The facility will reopen with normal winter operating hours on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, please visit the Household Hazardous Waste webpage.

Parking: Parking at meters and lots in downtown Lawrence will be free on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28-29. Saturday shoppers will need to pay to park during regular hours from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, please visit the Parking webpage.

Transit: There will be no public transit service on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28. Both fixed-route and paratransit buses will not operate. Service will resume on Friday, Nov. 29.

Parks and Recreation: The Administrative Office in South Park will be closed Thursday-Friday, Nov. 28-29, and will reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 2.

Recreation Centers: East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St. and the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St. will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, while Sports Pavilion Lawrence, 100 Rock Chalk Lane, will close at 9 p.m. All centers will remain closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28.

Sports Pavilion Lawrence will be open from 5:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, while East Lawrence Recreation Center, Holcom Park Recreation Center and the Community Building will be open from 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. All offices at each facility will be closed. Special Populations: There are two programs scheduled during the Thanksgiving week – Acting 101 will be held 6:30 – 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the Carnegie Building, 200 W. 9th St., and Wheelchair Basketball will be held 7 – 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the East Lawrence Recreation Center. Adult SportsThere are no programs or league play scheduled for Wednesday – Saturday, Nov. 27-30. Programs will resume on Sunday, Dec. 1. For more information, please contact Josh Maike, adult sports supervisor, at (785) 832-7920.

Prairie Park Nature Center: Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be closed Thanksgiving Day and Friday, Nov. 29. It will reopen with normal operating hours on Saturday, Nov. 30, 9 a.m. -5 p.m. For more information, please contact the nature center at (785) 832-7980.

Aquatic DivisionThe Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Dr., will hold the following hours on Wednesday, Nov. 27:

  • Lap Swimming: 5:15 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Warm Water Workout: 8 a.m. -10 a.m.
  • Zero Depth and Children’s Area: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Waterslide and Diving Area: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The center will be closed Thursday, Nov. 28. It will reopen on Friday, Nov. 29, with holiday hours. The Competitive Pool will be open from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. for lap swimming and the Zero Depth and Children’s Area will be open from 1 – 8 p.m. The Waterslide and Diving Area will be open from 1 – 7:45 p.m. The Aquatic Administrative office will be closed.

Lifelong RecreationThere are no classes meeting during the holiday.

Recreation Instruction: There are no classes meeting during the holiday. However, there is a special gymnastics program Shop N’ Drop, being held 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, for those ages 5-12 at Sport Pavilion Lawrence. Cost is $30 per child. Special Events: There are no Special Events planned during the week of Thanksgiving.

Youth Sports: There are no Parks and Recreation youth basketball and Hoopster practices scheduled Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 28-Dec. 1. Practices and games will resume on Monday, Dec. 2.
