City Compost Facility to open Saturdays beginning March 7

Kevin PowellCity, Solid Waste

Beginning March 7, the City of Lawrence Compost Facility will be open to the public on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through mid-December, weather permitting, for brush and yard waste drop-off, as well as compost and woodchip purchases.

The compost facility is East of Haskell Avenue, located at 1420 East 11th Street.

Residents may drop off brush and other yard waste starting at $5 per small truckload. Larger trucks and trailers may be subject to additional fees. Acceptable items include leaves, grass clippings, garden waste, and prunings from trees and shrubs. Tree trunks and large limbs must not be longer than four feet and no more than eight inches in diameter. All materials must be loose (i.e., no plastic bags, bundles or ties).

Materials not accepted at the Compost Facility include lumber, pallets, sod, stones, rope, fill dirt, food waste, metal and plastic.

Compost and woodchips may be purchased while the Compost Facility is open for $10 per small truckload. Larger trucks and trailers may be subject to additional fees. Residents must bring a shovel or other tools, as compost and woodchip purchases are self-loaded, except for one Saturday each month (April-October) when City staff will be on-site to load vehicles and trailers with loading equipment.

The City-loaded Saturdays for 2020 are April 4, May 2, June 6, July 11, August 1, September 5 and October 3.

All transactions at the Compost Facility are CASH ONLY.
