City to begin comprehensive pavement condition evaluation on all City roadways

Kevin PowellCity, Municipal Services and Operations

The City of Lawrence is set to begin a project to assess and inventory the condition of all roadways within the city limits. To accomplish this, the City retained the services of Data Transfer Solutions, LLC (DTS), a nationwide firm that provides professional asset management and mobile data collection services to local and state government agencies. The project is projected to begin Wednesday, April 1, and is expected to last approximately six weeks, weather permitting.

The project is a key factor in developing a City-wide asset management plan. With a better understanding of the conditions of all roadways within City limits, the City will be able to develop a plan to strategically maintain the infrastructure at the lowest cost of ownership.

To evaluate the roadway conditions, DTS deploys a fleet of data collection vehicles equipped with digital cameras that will collect imagery on all pavement and above-ground, transportation-related assets located within the right-of-way.  This imagery will be used to create a digital video inventory.

To collect all relevant data, the vehicles will be traveling all roads within the City of Lawrence. DTS staff may be required to drive each road several times to collect the required data. The vehicles will only collect data during daylight hours to ensure the highest quality of data and imagery. The DTS vehicles are white vans with DTS logos and large cameras and mechanical equipment on top and in front of the vehicle (see photo below).
