On Monday, June 29, City staff will begin the reconfiguration of Massachusetts Street for the recently-approved plan, developed by Gould Evans and Downtown Lawrence Inc., to allow businesses additional space for retail and dining activities outdoors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The reconfiguration work will cause traffic alterations on Massachusetts Street, which are detailed below.

  • Monday, June 29 – 900 block of Massachusetts Street closed to traffic beginning at 7 a.m. When completed, staff will reopen the 900 block and close the 1000 block for reconfiguration work.
  • Tuesday, June 30 – 700 block of Massachusetts Street closed to traffic beginning at 7 a.m. When completed, staff will reopen the 700 block and close the 800 block for reconfiguration work.
  • Wednesday, July 1 – 600 block of Massachusetts Street closed to traffic beginning at 7 a.m.
“No parking” signs will be hung in various locations on Massachusetts Street to make drivers aware of the upcoming changes. “No parking” bags will be placed on parking meters a day ahead of each change (i.e., bags will be placed Sunday for Monday’s work). Message boards will also be placed near the work for closure information.

The reconfiguration work includes street patching, signing, pavement marking and rubber curb installation.

The original reconfiguration plan allowed for 126 parking spaces, but revisions have been made to add 37 spaces, bringing the total to 163. Additionally, there is an area at the end of each block that could be restored if not utilized for business activity.

The City Commission will revisit the reconfiguration plan at the City Commission meeting on August 4.
