Waterline replacement project to alter traffic on 9th Street between Emery Road and Arkansas Street

Kevin PowellCity, Construction, Municipal Services and Operations

Beginning Tuesday, July 7, a waterline replacement project will cause lane restrictions on 9th Street between Emery Road and Arkansas Street. Local traffic and access to residences will be maintained during the lane restrictions.

Traffic on eastbound 9th Street from Emery Road to Arkansas Street will be shifted into the center turn lane to facilitate the waterline construction.

The project will replace approximately 645 linear feet of 6-inch and 4-inch diameter water main pipe with new 8-inch waterlines, as well as eliminate an existing dead-end within the distribution system. The waterline replacement is being completed as part of the Municipal Services & Operations department’s annual waterline replacement program and was budgeted in the 2020 CIP.

Additionally, as part of a future phase of the project, 9th Street will be temporarily closed approximately 500 feet east of Emery Road. Additional details will be provided as the project progresses.

The project is scheduled to last until September 23, 2020. Traffic control will be in place through all phases of the project, and suggested detours will be marked. Property owners and/or occupants will be given a minimum of 48-hours’ notice of any access restrictions to their property and a minimum of 24-hours’ notice of any planned water service interruption.

Updates will be provided as necessary. All project timelines are subject to change due to weather and other project-related delays. For more information on construction projects and traffic alterations in Lawrence, visit lawrenceks.org/construction.
