Construction to begin at 21st & Massachusetts on October 21

Kevin PowellCity, Construction, Municipal Services and Operations

On Wednesday, October 21, construction will begin to add a pedestrian hybrid beacon at the intersection of 21st Street and Massachusetts Street.

The signal will facilitate the safer crossing of Massachusetts Street for pedestrians and bicyclists. This project will also limit the 21st Street turning movements to right-turn only when approaching Massachusetts Street from both the east and the west.

The construction will necessitate phased traffic control, including complete closures of portions of 21st Street, as well as lane reductions on Massachusetts Street.

21st Street from Vermont Street to Massachusetts Street will be closed to through traffic October 21-28. Additionally, the southbound lane of Massachusetts Street will be reduced to one lane during the same period between 20th Street and 21st Street.

Additional lane closures of southbound Massachusetts Street from 20th Street to 21st Street, as well as northbound Massachusetts Street from 22nd Street to 21st Street, will occur during normal working hours (weekdays, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.), as needed, from October 28 through November 27.

A closure of 21st Street from Massachusetts Street to New Hampshire Street will occur in November. More details will be provided when dates are finalized.

Traffic control will be in place and suggested detours will be marked.

Updates will be provided as necessary. All project timelines are subject to change due to weather and other project-related delays. For more information on construction projects and traffic alterations in Lawrence, visit lawrenceks.org/construction.
