Shelters, park restrooms, fountains closing for season

Kevin PowellCity, Parks & Recreation

Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is beginning to winterize all outdoor shelters, park water fountains and restrooms for the upcoming late fall and winter seasons.  All outdoor drinking fountains, water fountain features and park restrooms will be closed by Friday, Oct. 30, or earlier due to freezing temperatures.

The restrooms and shelters are closed during the winter months to avoid water freezing in pipes, as well as general maintenance that is performed on the facilities.  The restroom in the Lawrence Rotary Arboretum, 5100 West 27th St., will remain functioning as it has heated pipes to avoid freezing lines.

The shelters and restrooms will re-open in spring 2021. Shelter reservations are currently being accepted at any Parks and Recreation facility for dates no more than one year from the desired reservation date between Thursday, April 15, and Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021. There are also several indoor facilities available for year-round rental to accommodate reception, showers and party needs.
