The Kansas Department of Transportation announced the distribution of funding for the Kansas Airport Improvement Program, including $184,435 to the City of Lawrence to repair the taxilanes at the Lawrence Municipal Airport.
The Kansas Airport Improvement Program (KAIP) receives $5 million annually through KDOT’s IKE transportation program. It requires airport sponsors to share the project costs by paying a minimum of 10% of the total project. Lawrence’s project was one of 32 communities selected for KAIP funding.
“Aviation currently represents $20.6 billion in total economic impact for the State of Kansas,” Gov. Laura Kelly said. “Working together, the Kansas Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration and local communities are enhancing the safety of our transportation infrastructure and expanding this economic impact.”
The taxilanes that will be repaired with the funding include the pavement that flanks both sides of T-Hangar Building A and pavement that is directly north of T-Hangar Buildings B and C.
“We are very excited to be awarded the funding for this project,” Lawrence Municipal Airport Manager Amanda Sahin said. “This project is of high importance to the Lawrence Municipal Airport tenants, and we are happy to know that this funding will help make the repairs a reality.
The funds will be available in the summer of 2021. The Municipal Services & Operations Department plans to submit a budget adjustment in the coming months to allow for the City’s required 10% project match and design.
The areas that were approved for funding represent two of three total applications submitted for the KAIP funding. MSO staff plans to discuss options for gaining additional funding to complete the repairs to the area not awarded funding by KDOT.
“Aviation is a particularly important mode of transportation for Kansas industry and the delivery of healthcare services and disaster relief,” KDOT Transportation Secretary Julie Lorenz said. “These airport improvements are a few of many important efforts to empower aviation economic growth across our entire state.”
The KAIP funding comes on the back of the Lawrence Municipal Airport completing major rehabilitation to runway 15/33, for which the City of Lawrence was awarded a $4 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.
