LPRD’s youth sports winter registration nearing deadline

Kevin PowellCity, Parks & Recreation

The deadline for Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s winter youth basketball and soccer is Wednesday, January 20.

LPRD’s youth sports programs provide an opportunity for children to play recreational sports in an organized, competitive, yet recreational setting during the school year. Our youth sports programs will teach some basic skills and fundamentals, as well as teaching fair play, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Youth Basketball has leagues open to both boys and girls, kindergarten through eighth grade. Teams are determined based on current grade level and the school each child attends; however, teams may not only be made up of children exclusively from the same school. One-hour practices will begin the week of Monday, February 1. Games will be held Saturdays, Feb 6-March 20, for those in kindergarten through fourth grade, and Sundays, Feb 14-March 28, for those in fifth grade through eighth grade. League cost is $45 for children in kindergarten through fourth grade and $55 for children in fifth grade through eighth grades. To register for Youth Basketball, please visit: http://lprd.org/activity?n=124101. For more information, contact Alex Husbenet, youth sports supervisor, ahusbenet@lawrenceks.org, (785) 330-7355.

Games will be held Saturdays, Feb. 6-March 20, at Sports Pavilion Lawrence, 100 Rock Chalk Lane. Cost to participate is $50 (Kindergarten through fourth grade) and $60 (fifth grade through eighth grade) per child. Both programs require face coverings being worn at all times and are following COVID-19 safety guidelines, which can be found at https://lawks.us/3iCFdic(basketball) and https://lawks.us/39pXInK (soccer). Games being played are dependent on current conditions at the time games are to be played.

Conditions will be continuously monitored and reviewed in consultation with public health professionals. Status updates will continue to be updated every Thursday to indicate the current risk level using green, yellow, orange or red based on the number of new cases, trends and percentage of positive COVID-19 test to mirror Lawrence-Douglas County Health’s recommendations being used for the Smart and Safe School Reopening Guidelines and Status for county schools. Individuals may find the current status by visiting the department website or the department social media platforms, Twitter and Facebook.
