Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is offering a class to learn the safety techniques involved when watching young children, as well as how to create a business through babysitting.
Safe Sitter is open to those 11 years-old to 16 years-old and includes safety skills like CPR and practical skills such as feeding, changing and dealing with problem behavior. The program will also include introductory business skills in marketing and price negotiation. Participants will develop self-confidence in addition to skills developed through the curriculum and should set any participant up to begin their own babysitting service.
The class is being held in two three-hour sessions 5-8 p.m., Wednesdays, Feb. 3, and Feb. 10, at the Community Building, 115 West 11th Street. Participants will receive a certificate and a babysitter handbook upon completion of the program. Registration fee is $85.
This program requires face coverings to be worn at all times and follows COVID-19 safety guidelines, which can be found at https://assets.lawrenceks.org/lprd/covid/instructionalclasses.pdf.
Conditions will be continuously monitored and reviewed in consultation with public health professionals. Status updates will continue to be updated every Thursday to indicate the current risk level using green, yellow, orange or red based on the number of new cases, trends and percentage of positive COVID-19 test to mirror Lawrence-Douglas County Health’s recommendations being used for the Smart and Safe School Reopening Guidelines and Status for county schools. Individuals may find the current status by visiting the department website or the department social media platforms, Twitter and Facebook.
