Lawrence Parks and Recreation offers yearlong gymnastics classes for children of all skill levels. Registration is ongoing and may be done on a monthly basis.
Tumble Bears is for children age three and just starting their gymnastic journey. Participants will improve their physical awareness, body coordination and explore movement. Large motor skills are improved using the bars, tumble track and balance beam. Emphasis is placed on learning tumbling skills such as forward rolls, balancing, strength coordination and movement exploration. Children learn socialization skills such as making new friends, taking turns, and following directions from an adult other than their parents. Gym Bears is for participants ages four to five. Students will be introduced to all gymnastics equipment throughout the session. New target skills and stations will be provided to continue building strength, agility, confidence, coordination and social skills. Classes are held: Mondays, 5:30–6:25 p.m., Wednesdays, 4:20–5:15 p.m. and 5:30–6:25 p.m., or Saturdays, 8:50–9:45 a.m. and 10–10:55 a.m. Enroll online at: http://lprd.org/activity?n=916001.
Beginning Boys is for participants six to 10 years-old. This class will focus on proper skill progression, fundamental strength development, and balance. Boys will work on developing proper form on the following apparatus: floor, rings, bars, vault, and trampoline. Beginning Girls is for students six to 11 years-old. Participants will develop flexibility, body positioning, improved posture, rhythmic movement, balance and strength. Girls will work on developing proper form on the following apparatus: floor, beam, bars, vault, and trampoline. Classes are held: Tuesdays, 5:30–6:25 p.m., Wednesdays, 5:30–6:25 p.m., Thursdays, 5:30–6:25 p.m. or Saturdays, 8:50–9:45 a.m. and 10–10:55 a.m. Enroll online at: http://lprd.org/activity?n=916012.
If classes are filled, you may opt to be put on a waitlist and notified when a spot becomes available. All classes are currently held at Sports Pavilion Lawrence®, 100 Rock Chalk Lane.
Gymnastics classes require face coverings to be worn at all times for children ages five and older and are following COVID-19 safety guidelines, which can be found at https://assets.lawrenceks.org/lprd/covid/gymnastics.pdf.
Conditions will be continuously monitored and reviewed in consultation with public health professionals. Status updates will continue to be updated every Thursday to indicate the current risk level using green, yellow, orange or red based on the number of new cases, trends and percentage of positive COVID-19 test to mirror Lawrence-Douglas County Health’s recommendations being used for the Smart and Safe School Reopening Guidelines and Status for county schools.
