City Compost facility to reopen March 6; dates set for 2021 City-load

Beginning Saturday, March 6, the City of Lawrence Compost Facility, located at 1420 East 11th Street, will reopen to the public on Saturdays through mid-December. The facility will be open for new hours in 2021, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on all Saturdays until mid-December, weather permitting, except for November 27, when the facility will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Residents may drop off brush and other yard waste starting at $5 per small truckload. Larger trucks and trailers may be subject to additional fees. Acceptable items include leaves, grass clippings, garden waste, and prunings from trees and shrubs. Tree trunks and large limbs must not be longer than four feet and no more than eight inches in diameter. All materials must be loose (i.e., no plastic bags, bundles or ties).

Materials not accepted at the Compost Facility include lumber, pallets, sod, stones, rope, fill dirt, food waste, metal and plastic.

Residents can purchase compost and woodchips for $10 per small truckload as well. Larger trucks and trailers may be subject to additional fees. Residents must bring a shovel or other tools, as compost and woodchip purchases are self-loaded.

Additionally, the City announced its 2021 Compost and Woodchip City-Load event dates, beginning with the Spring kick-off sale event scheduled for Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20. Following the kick-off sale event, City-load events occur on the first Saturday of the month and allow customers to have compost and/or woodchips loaded into their trucks or trailers by City staff using loading equipment for $10 per scoop. The 2021 Dates are listed below.

All transactions at the Compost Facility are CASH ONLY. Compost and woodchips from the City’s Compost Facility are not intended for commercial applications.
