Stream advisory issued for Naismith Creek

Kevin PowellCity, Municipal Services and Operations

The City of Lawrence has issued a Stream Advisory for Naismith Creek from the storm channel at 20th and Naismith Drive to 31st and Louisiana, effective Friday, April 16, 2021.

This stream advisory is being issued for precautionary measures after field tests detected an elevated level of E. coli bacteria as a result of a sanitary sewer overflow. The public is advised to avoid contact with the affected streams and to restrict pet access to those waterways until any impacts from the overflow are negligible.

Advisory signs have been posted along the affected area.

This has no effect on the drinking water in Lawrence.

Sanitary sewer contents are known to have pathogens, including E. coli bacteria. Water-borne pathogens can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, rashes, infections and other symptoms. They may post a special health risk for infants, young children, the elderly and people with severely compromised immune systems.

The stream advisory will remain in effect until monitoring indicates conditions are safe. City staff will continue monitoring and sampling the creeks and update the public when the advisory is lifted.
