City offices will be closed on Monday, May 31, in observance of Memorial Day.
SOLID WASTE: No changes are planned in the solid waste route schedules. Residential trash, recycling, and yard waste collection service will run as usual on Monday, May 31. Commercial trash and cardboard collection service will also run as usual.
PARKING: Parking meters, lots and garages will be free on Monday, May 31.
TRANSIT: The Lawrence Transit System T and T Lift buses will not operate on May 31.
EMS: Emergency services (fire, police, EMS) will not be impacted. If you have a medical, fire or police emergency please call 9-1-1. Law Enforcement and Fire Medical administrative offices will be closed.
PARKS AND RECREATION:
Hours for parks and recreation facilities on Memorial Day are:
- Sports Pavilion Lawrence®, 100 Rock Chalk Lane, will be open 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., will be open 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
- East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St., will be open 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
- Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St., will be closed due to a flooring project and will reopen on Tuesday, June 1.
- The Administrative Office in South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St., will be closed.
- Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be closed.
The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Kentucky St., will not be open on the holiday. It is scheduled to open Monday, June 14. The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive | (785) 832-7946 (SWIM), will be open alternate hours for the holiday weekend:
- Saturday, May 29: Lap Swimming open from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Waterslide, diving area and the zero-depth/children’s area are closed. - Sunday, May 30: Lap swimming open from 1 – 6 p.m.

Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 East 902 Rd., will be open and available for tee times. Patrons can schedule a tee time by contacting (785) 748-0600. The City’s three cemeteries, Oak Hill Cemetery, 1605 Oak Hill Ave.; Maple Grove Cemetery, intersection of highways 24 and 40; and Memorial Park Cemetery, 1517 E. 15th St., will be open to visitors from dawn to dusk during the holiday weekend. Parks and Recreation staff will be available to answer questions at Memorial Park Cemetery from 10 a.m. – noon, Saturday, May 29 – Monday, May 31. Some areas of the cemeteries have not been mowed. Mowing has been stymied over the past couple of weeks due to wet conditions, which can create ruts and mud when mowed. Cemetery maintenance staff will continue to work as areas dry.
No recreational classes, special populations, lifelong recreation (50-plus), special events or youth sports will be held on the holiday. There will no adult sports leagues Sunday, May 30 – Monday, May 31. There will also be no preschool open gym gymnastics, Tumble “N’ Play, Saturday, May 29 –Monday, May 31.
