2021 Independence Day closures and service alterations

City offices will be closed on Monday, July 5, in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

SOLID WASTE: There are no changes in the solid waste route schedule. Residential trash, recycling and yard waste collection service will run as usual on Monday, July 5. Commercial trash and cardboard collection service will also run as usual. The city-load event at the compost facility scheduled for Saturday, July 3, is canceled. The facility will still be open for drop-off and self-load activities on that day.

PARKING: Parking meters, lots and garages in downtown Lawrence will be free to use on Monday, July 5.

TRANSIT:  Lawrence Transit will not be impacted, as the July 4 holiday falls on a Sunday and buses do not operate on Sundays. Buses will run as scheduled on Monday, July 5.

EMS: Emergency services (fire, police, EMS) will not be impacted. If you have a medical, fire or police emergency, please call 9-1-1. Law Enforcement and Fire Medical administrative offices will be closed on Monday, July 5.

PARKS AND RECREATION: The following recreation facilities will be closed on Sunday, July 4. They will reopen from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Monday, July 5.

  • Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St.
  • The Community Building, 115 W. 11th St.
  • East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.

Holiday hours for other recreation facilities are as follows:

  • Sports Pavilion Lawrence, 100 Rock Chalk Lane, will be open from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 4 and from 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Monday, July 5.
  • The Parks and Recreation administrative office and the cemeteries office in South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St., will be closed on Monday, July 5. It will reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6.
  • Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be closed and no programming will be held on the holiday. The center will also be closed on Monday, July 5, which is part of its normal operation schedule. It will reopen from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6.

Unified Day Camp will not be held on Monday, July 5, and will resume on Tuesday, July 6.

Recreation classes scheduled for July 3-4, will not be held. This includes all fitness, dance, gymnastics and martial arts programs. The rest of the recreation classes will resume as scheduled on Monday, July 5. Lifelong Recreation programming will also be held as scheduled on Monday, July 5. There will also be tennis programming held on Monday, July 5.

Summer Playgrounds (Neighborhood Drop-In Program) will not be held on Monday, July 5, and will resume on Tuesday, July 6.

No adult sports league games are scheduled for July 4-5. Leagues will resume on Tuesday, July 6. Youth sports league games will not be held July 2-4. Youth sports will resume on Monday, July 5.

Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Rd., will be open July 4-5 and is accepting tee times online or by phone, (785) 748-0600.

The Aquatic Division will have altered hours for the holiday. The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be closed Sunday, July 4, and open from 6:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Monday, July 5. The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Kentucky St., will be open from 1-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 4 and from 1-7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 5. The South Park Wading Pool, 1131 Massachusetts St., will be open from 1-7 p.m. on Monday, July 5. There will be no aquatic fitness or instructional aquatic classes held on Monday, July 5.
