The City of Lawrence, Parks and Recreation Department is updating the face covering requirement for its indoor programs and activities.
As of now, face coverings will still be required at all recreation and aquatic facilities; however, when actively participating in a program, activity or sports league face coverings will not be required for those 12 years-old and older. Those two years-old to 11 years-old while inside an indoor facility will be required to wear face coverings at all times by county health order regardless of participation.
For participants 12 years-old and older in sports, face coverings will continue to be required when not participating on the field or court of play. Volunteer coaches will also be required to wear them at all times, as well as all spectators.
Free play will be allowed at all recreation facilities, but face coverings will be required when not actively playing on the court. Those using cardio and weight equipment will not be required to wear a face covering, but will need to mask when exiting a machine and moving about the facility. At the present time, those using the track at Sports Pavilion Lawrence or walking in a gymnasium will continue to be required to wear a face covering while walking or jogging.
For all programs and visitors at Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., face coverings will continue being required by everyone to protect the animals and reptiles.
All City employees will continue wearing face coverings when in public indoor areas and areas where they cannot social distance.
Throughout the pandemic, the City has worked with its partners and followed the latest health and safety guidance from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control.
As the conditions surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to change, the City wants to assure everyone that it is closely monitoring the latest information and will make necessary changes as warranted. The health and safety of our community and employees will continue to be our top priority.
