Shelters, park restrooms, fountains closing for season

Kevin PowellCity, Parks & Recreation

Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department will begin winterizing all outdoor shelters, park water fountains and restrooms for the upcoming late fall and winter seasons.  All outdoor drinking fountains, water fountain features and park restrooms will begin to be shut by or shortly after Saturday, Oct. 30.

The restrooms and shelters are closed during the winter months to avoid water freezing in pipes, as well as provide access for general maintenance.  The restroom in the Lawrence Rotary Arboretum, 5100 West 27th St., will remain operational as it has heated pipes to avoid freezing lines.

The shelters and restrooms will re-open in spring 2022. Shelter reservations are currently being accepted online and at any Parks and Recreation facility for dates no more than one year from the desired reservation date between Friday, April 15, and Sunday, Oct. 30, 2022. There are also several indoor facilities available for year-round rental to accommodate reception, showers and party needs.

Reservations may be made at any of the following Parks and Recreation facilities including: Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive; Community Building, 115 W. 11th St.; Sports Pavilion Lawrence, 100 Rock Chalk Lane; Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St. or East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.
