Construction at 9th & Iowa to begin February 14

Kevin PowellCity, Construction, Municipal Services and Operations

Beginning Monday, Feb. 14, construction work to address traffic signal, pedestrian and water main improvements near the intersection of 9th St. and Iowa St. will necessitate ongoing lane closures in the area. The work is expected to greatly improve pedestrian access.

Work will begin on February 14 to install sidewalk on the southside of 9th St., west of the 9th & Iowa intersection. This will require the closure of the outside lane of eastbound 9th St., just west of Iowa St. Throughout the project, additional lane closures near the intersection will include the outside lane of southbound Iowa St., the outside lane of westbound 9th St., and the outside lane of northbound Iowa St.

When complete, the project will provide new pedestrian access on the north and south sides of 9th St. west of Iowa St. as well as replace three sidewalk ramps, replace three signal poles and appurtenances, and replace 1,200 ft. of old water main.

Occasionally during this ongoing work, traffic signals at 9th & Iowa will be out of service and temporary stop signs will be in place to assist with traffic needs.

Lawrence Transit stops 312 (on route 36) and 327 (on routes 4 and 36) will be closed during the construction. Alternative stops for route 36 are stops 353 and 354 at Rockledge Rd. & 9th St. An alternative stop for route 4 is stop 212 at 9th & Iowa (The Merc).

The project is expected to last through May 2022. Specific timing on new lane closures will be announced on the City’s Facebook and Twitter pages. All project timelines are subject to change due to weather and other project-related delays. For more information on construction projects and traffic alterations in Lawrence, visit lawrenceks.org/construction.
