Independence Day closures and service alterations

City offices will be closed on Monday, July 4, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Additional service alterations are noted below.

SOLID WASTE: There will be no residential solid waste collection on Monday, July 4. Trash and recycling collection will be delayed by one day for all residential customers during the holiday week. Regular Monday residential customers will have collection services on Tuesday, Tuesday customers on Wednesday, Wednesday customers on Thursday, Thursday customers on Friday, and Friday customers on Saturday.

Additionally, during the holiday week (July 3–9), the following changes to solid waste collection services will take place:

  • No yard waste collections throughout the holiday week
  • No bulk item pick-ups throughout the holiday week
  • No roll-off services on the holiday or Saturday of the holiday week
  • No cart/dumpster swaps, deliveries, or maintenance on the holiday or Saturday of the holiday week

Commercial solid waste collection routes will be collected on schedule for the week, with one exception that there will be no cardboard recycling service on July 4 outside of the downtown district.

PARKING: Parking meters, lots and garages will be free on Monday, July 4.

TRANSIT: Lawrence Transit fixed-route and paratransit bus service will not operate on Monday, July 4.

EMS: Emergency services (fire, police, EMS) will not be impacted. If you have a medical, fire or police emergency, please call 9-1-1. Law Enforcement and Fire Medical administrative offices will be closed on Monday, July 4.

PARKS AND RECREATION: The following recreation facilities will be closed Monday, July 4: Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St.;  the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St.; East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.; and Sports Pavilion Lawrence, 100 Rock Chalk Lane.

Facilities will reopen Tuesday, July 5, with the following hours:

  • East Lawrence Recreation Center: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Holcom Park Recreation Center : 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • The Community Building: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Sports Pavilion Lawrence: 5:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.

The cemeteries office will be closed Monday, July 4. It will be open from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5.

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be closed and no programming will be held on the holiday. It will reopen from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5.

Unified Day Camp will not be held Monday, July 4, or Tuesday, July 5. It will resume on Wednesday, July 6.

Recreation classes scheduled from Saturday, July 2 – Monday, July 4, will not be held. This includes all fitness, dance, gymnastics and martial arts programs. These classes will resume as scheduled on Tuesday, July 5. Lifelong Recreation programming will not be held Monday, July 4. These classes will resume as scheduled on Tuesday, July 5.

Summer Playgrounds (Neighborhood Drop-In Program) will not be held Monday, July 4, and will resume Tuesday, July 5.

No adult sports league games are scheduled for Sunday, July 3, or Monday, July 4. Leagues will resume Tuesday, July 5. Youth sports league games will not be held from Friday, July 1 – Monday, July 4. Youth sports will resume Tuesday, July 5.

There will be no aquatic fitness or instructional aquatic classes held Monday, July 4.

Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Rd., will be open and is accepting tee times by phone, (785) 748-0600, for the holiday.

The Aquatic Division will have altered hours for the holiday.

  • The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be open Monday, July 4, for lap swimming from 6:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. and for warm water workout from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Kentucky St., will be open from 1-6 p.m. on Monday, July 4.
  • South Park Wading Pool, 1131 Massachusetts St., will be closed on Monday, July 4.
