Youth Basketball now accepting registration for recreational leagues

Kevin PowellCity, Parks & Recreation

Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s youth sports division is currently accepting registrations for fall Youth Basketball leagues.

The objective of LPRD’s youth basketball program is to provide an opportunity for children to play basketball in an organized and competitive yet recreational setting. Emphasis will be placed on teaching basic skills and fundamentals as well as fair play, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Teams and leagues are formed by current grade level, ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade, and team assignment depends primarily on who volunteers to coach and the school their child attends. Not all the teams will be made up of children exclusively from the same school.

A one-hour practice time will be determined by the coach and will begin the week of Monday, Oct. 24.

Kindergarten through fourth grade games will be held on Saturdays, Nov. 5-Dec. 17. Cost is $45 per child. Saturday games will be held at neighborhood recreation centers.

Fifth grade through eighth grade games will be played on Sundays, Nov. 6-Dec. 18. Cost is $55 and includes a game shirt. Sunday games will be held at Sports Pavilion Lawrence®, 100 Rock Chalk Lane.

The initial deadline to register is Thursday, Sept. 1. After Sept. 1, the price increases to $60 for kindergarten through fourth grade leagues and $70 for fifth grade through eighth grade leagues.
