Intersection of 19th & Alabama to open August 31

Kevin PowellCity, Construction, Municipal Services and Operations

The City of Lawrence will reopen the intersection of 19th St. & Alabama St. on Wednesday afternoon, August 31. Please note that 19th St. will remain closed from the west side of the 19th & Alabama intersection to Arkansas St.

The 19th St. construction is part of an ongoing stormwater improvement project. Construction for the stormwater improvements will shift further west along 19th St., which will allow traffic to circulate around Lawrence High School (LHS). Vehicles driving east along 21st St. can turn north onto Alabama St. to reach the North parking lot of LHS.

Westbound drivers on 19th St. will need to turn south at Alabama St. Traffic will no longer be able to cut through the neighborhood north of 19th St. due to the existing diverter on 18th St. The official detour for westbound and eastbound traffic for 19th St. is 23rd St. via Naismith Dr. or Louisiana St.

Construction along 19th St. is anticipated to end in mid-November.

All project timelines are subject to change due to weather and other project-related delays. For more information on construction projects and traffic alterations in Lawrence, visit lawrenceks.org/construction.
