The Lawrence Kansas Police Department comprehensive management study identified the need for this work group. It is articulated in the project charter recently drafted by the CPRB and staff and approved by the City Commission.
The work group is tasked with reviewing the Lawrence Kansas Police Department’s complaint process, assessing the role and authority of the CPRB, and analyzing the proposed ordinance changes previously presented by members of the CPRB. The goal of the Community-Police Oversight Work Group is to provide the CPRB and members of the Lawrence City Commission with recommended improvements that align with the City’s strategic plan commitments based on evidence, best practices, and community input.
The City hired Jonathan Morris of J. Morris Consulting to facilitate work group meetings, design the overall process, and ensure that community input is a top priority throughout the process. J. Morris Consulting is based in Lawrence and services clients nationwide.
After Mr. Morris meets individually with work group members, the first Community-Police Oversight Work Group meeting is anticipated to be held within a few weeks. The date will be announced once confirmed. Work group members will draft a schedule for future meetings at that time. All meetings will be open to the public. The initial plan calls for the process to be completed within four months.
Information about the Community-Police Oversight Work Group will be posted on the City’s boards and commissions web page.
