City develops adult scholarships for parks & recreation programs; youth scholarship program gets boost

Kevin PowellCity, Parks & Recreation

The City of Lawrence has created an adult scholarship program for parks and recreation activities and programs, beginning with Spring 2023 enrollment.

The adult scholarship program is open to all Douglas County residents ages 18-years-old and older with a demonstrated financial need. Scholarships will cover half of a program’s registration fee for eligible programs.

Eligible recipients will need to provide a current KanCare insurance card or letter from an organization that provides financial support, like the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Kansas Department of Children and Families (DCF) or others, which verifies a financial status equivalent to the free/reduced lunch eligibility standards or federal income eligibility guidelines.

The City allocated $30,000 for adult scholarships in the 2023 budget. They also allocated an additional $20,000 in funding for youth scholarships, bringing the total for youth scholarships in 2023 to $55,000. The youth scholarship fund was established in 1996 through a grant from the St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee.
