Jayhawk Watershed Stormwater Project open house set for March 8

Kevin PowellCity, Municipal Services and Operations

The Lawrence community is invited to an open house for the Jayhawk Watershed Project from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, at the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N 2nd St, Lawrence, KS. At this open-house-style meeting, people can come and go as they please to best accommodate busy schedules. The project team will be available to review conceptual construction plans, answer questions about the project, and receive input, and feedback from community members.

The City of Lawrence and JEO Consulting Group are continuing planning efforts for the Jayhawk Watershed stormwater project. The Jayhawk Watershed stormwater project began in 2020 and started with a detailed analysis of the stormwater system from KU’s campus to the Kansas River. Design plan development for the project kicked off in September 2022. Currently, the project team is preparing to present 60% design plans for proposed improvements to specific project areas to the City Commission and will request approval to move to full design plans. This will enable the city leaders to make phasing decisions that align with the total budget available for the project over the next three to five years.

The Jayhawk Watershed project was originally identified in the 1996 Stormwater Master Plan. The 2023-2027 five year Capital Improvement Plan allocates $8 Million to the project.

Project information is available on the project website linked here, or can be viewed by scanning the QR code below.
