Matthew Herbert
City Commissioner

(785) 550-2085

Matthew Herbert moved to Lawrence, Kansas at age 11, fell in love with the town and simply never left. When his parents both took jobs in Wichita his senior year of high school, he moved into the basement of a classmate rather than have to leave Lawrence behind.

After earning a BGS in history, a BSE in secondary education and a master’s degree in curriculum & instruction all from the University of Kansas, Matthew began teaching high school debate at Highland Park high school in Topeka, Kansas. In 2006, Matthew was awarded the Horizon Award from the State of Kansas, an award given annually to the best new teachers in the state. Three years later, Matthew’s teaching and coaching was recognized on the floor of the state senate after his former high school debate student, Derek Ziegler, won the Collegiate National Debate Championship. Today, Matthew finds himself teaching civics and government at Lawrence High School. In addition to his teaching duties, Matthew owns Renaissance Property Management.

Matthew has been married to local jeweler Rachael Sudlow since 2008. He and his wife are the proud parents of one daughter, Wren, born in 2012.
