Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Adopt-A-Park program assists with keeping City parks clean and free of trash and debris.
Organizations, groups and families are invited to participate in the Adopt-A-Park program. Each group is asked to pick up trash and debris a minimum of four times during a calendar year.
Groups may select a park (depending on availability) to adopt or department staff can assign one. Groups are then asked to select four dates during the year to clean their adopted park. Groups are also requested to inform the department of dates selected for clean up one week prior to the schedule clean-up date, so park staff can coordinate trash removal.
Parks and Recreation will provide trash bags for groups cleaning their adopted park. They can be picked up at the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Parks and Recreation staff is also available to groups to discuss safety issues when cleaning the park. Parks and Recreation requests groups to have at least one adult over the age of 18 assisting with clean up. Park clean up should be conducted during daylight hours.
Parks and Recreation suggests those participating to use the buddy system when conducting clean up. The department requests groups not to trespass on private property near park land and not to interfere with others using the park. Groups should obey all park regulations and report problems, such as vandalism, unsafe conditions (tree limbs/playground equipment) and other concerns.
Groups participating acknowledge potential hazards and assume risk of injury from natural or hazardous materials, including plants (i.e. poison ivy). Once groups are finished picking up their adopted park, Parks and Recreation requests all trash be place together in a pre-determined designated area.
