Due to the ongoing winter storm, City facilities, including City Hall and all Parks, Recreation and Culture facilities, will be closed on Tuesday, Feb. 18. This is due to the forecasted winter storm resulting in dangerous travel conditions.

W. J. Francisco – First Democratic Mayor of Lawrence, KS
W. J. Francisco was elected as the first democratic mayor of Lawrence in 1914. He had moved to Lawrence from western Kansas to run W. J. Francisco’s Livery on the 800 block of Vermont Street.

One of his sons, C.B., went to the University of Kansas, became the first orthopedic surgeon in Kansas and the first male doctor to work at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Another son was a streetcar conductor in Lawrence.
