Married 50 Years

Phoebe V. (Schierling) Godwin was born Nov. 27, 1930, and raised in Inman, Kan., and Phillip A. Godwin was born Jan. 24, 1928, and grew up in Northern Indiana until moving to Hutchinson, Kan., in 1944. They met July 4, 1950, while Phoebe was in nurses training at Wesley Hospital in Wichita and Phillip was a pre-med student at the University of Kansas. Courtship was largely by mail, and they fell in love and married Dec. 23, 1951, in the chapel at Wesley Hospital while Phillip was in his first year of medical school at KU. At that time, the first 1 1/2 years of medical school were on the KU campus.

Phoebe helped put Phillip through medical school by working at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later at Menorah Hospital and then in a doctor’s office in Kansas City. After an internship at St. Luke’s in Kansas City, they returned to Lawrence, where Phillip joined Drs. H. Penfield Jones, Gene Manahan and Alex Mitchell in practice. Phillip later joined in establishing the Lawrence Family Practice Center with Drs. Bruner, Thomsen and Barnes. Phillip had both a family practice and an anesthesia practice. He retired after 43 years.

Phoebe and Phillip raised a family of three children: Gregory, Amy and Andrew (all three of whom are KU graduates). In 2001, they celebrated their long, fruitful and happy marriage on a 50th wedding anniversary Disney Cruise and Land Vacation with their children and their families.
