Vehicle Tows

All vehicles impounded by the Lawrence Police Department for infractions and/or arrests are taken to a local wrecker service, which has been contracted by the City of Lawrence.  Releases for vehicles are obtained from the Lawrence Police Department, 5100 Overland Drive, Lawrence, Kansas 66049, phone (785) 832-7501.

Vehicles will be released under the following conditions:

  • Proof of ownership is required to release any vehicle. Proof of ownership is defined as the vehicle title or vehicle registration.  Personal identification (such as driver’s license, KU ID, etc.) is also required.
  • If the registered owner is unavailable (lives out of town, sick, etc.) a signed and notarized statement must be obtained from the owner to authorize the release of said vehicle to any other person.  This authorization should include the full name of the owner, the year, make and model of the vehicle.  A copy of the title and/or registration will also be needed with the authorization.

There is a towing charge of $500 on vehicles over 12M gross vehicle weight or trucks with more than four wheels on the ground.  The towing charge on all other vehicles is $100  This is paid to the Lawrence Police Department at the time of the vehicle release.  The storage fees are set by the wrecker service, and are not connected with any fees set by the Lawrence Police Department.  Storage fees are paid directly to the wrecker service.

Any questions regarding this policy should be directed to the Captain of the Technical Services Division.
