City of Lawrence hosting informational meeting for Census 2020

January 16, 2020

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the City of Lawrence and Douglas County, KS, are hosting an informational meeting about the 2020 Census. The meeting will be from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and will take place in the Lawrence Public Library auditorium, located at 707 Vermont St.

Local census experts will be on-hand to share information on the 2020 Census, including timing, job opportunities and next steps. The meeting is open to the public and all community members are encouraged to attend, especially community and organizational leaders who will be integral in raising community-wide awareness of the importance of responding to the Census.

Getting an accurate Census count is important to the Lawrence and Douglas County communities. For each household that is missed in the 2020 Census, Lawrence misses out on approximately $49,242 in federal funding (over 10 years). In addition to federal funding, Census data is used in a variety of other ways, including determining state representation in the House of Representatives.

Speakers at the meeting will include Xanthippe Wedel, who works at the Kansas State Data Center at the University of Kansas and is on the Kansas Complete Count Committee, and Frankie Foster-Davis, who works in recruitment for the 2020 Census. There will be available time for a Q&A following the presentation.
