City of Lawrence awarded $326K KDOT grant for Naismith Mobility Enhancement project

March 10, 2020

The City of Lawrence was awarded a grant for $326,185 from the Kansas Department of Transportation as part of its Access, Innovation and Collaboration program for Fiscal Year 2021. This grant, under the Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program and the State Transit Funding Program, will require a 10% local match.

“This is great news for Lawrence,” Senior Project Engineer Jake Baldwin said. “The Naismith Drive Mobility Enhancement project will create several great benefits for the community, linking a heavily-used pedestrian corridor to the City’s transit system and completing the final segment of 2013 Fixed-Route Transit & Pedestrian Accessibility study.”

The grant, which is overseen by the Municipal Services & Operations Department, will be used to install 2,200 linear feet of sidewalk on the east side of Naismith Drive, connecting the sidewalk from 23rd Street to 19th Street, and adding amenities to the existing transit stop at 21st Street. The project requires a 10% local match.

“Transportation is the supporting fiber of our lives, and too often we assume that always means driving a car,” KDOT Deputy Secretary Maggie Doll said. “But thousands of Kansans do not have access to a car, are unable to drive or would prefer not to. That’s why I’m pleased that our new transportation program, FORWARD, retains the annual funding commitments to all modes of transportation including transit, bicycle and pedestrian paths, aviation and rail.”

KDOT awarded more than $7.4 million to 33 transit projects as part of the department’s new Access, Innovation and Collaboration program.
