Construction for 21st Street Bicycle Boulevard set to begin June 15

June 8, 2020

Construction of the Bicycle Boulevard on 21st Street is set to begin on June 15. The first phase of the multi-phase project will affect traffic patterns on Ousdahl Road and the intersection of 21st Street and Louisiana Street.

Ousdahl Road between 20th Terrace and 21st Street will be closed beginning June 15 to allow for the construction of a speed cushion. During this closure, there will be no through-traffic permitted, but residents along this section of Ousdahl will be able to access their driveways from the south at 21st Street. This portion of the project is expected to last one week.

Additionally, the intersection of 21st Street and Louisiana Street will also be closed beginning June 15 for intersection improvements related to the bicycle boulevard, as well as street maintenance. The construction work at this intersection is expected to last until August 1.

These closures will impact transit Route 7. Southbound Route 7 will remain on Massachusetts Street, turn right at 23rd Street, and turn left on Louisiana Street to return to the regular route. Northbound Route 7 will follow the same pattern in the opposite direction. Passengers may flag down the bus at 21st Street & Massachusetts Street during this reroute. For more information on reroutes, visit LawrenceTransit.org, call 785-864-4644 or visit the Lawrence Transit Facebook page.

Other phases of the project will begin on later dates. Updates will be made available as the project progresses. Throughout the project, minor impacts along the corridor can be expected. Traffic control devices will be in place for all aspects of the project and suggested detours will be marked when full lane closures are necessary.

The 21st Street Bicycle Boulevard project is expected to be completed by September 1. All project timelines are subject to change due to weather and other project-related delays. For more information on construction projects and traffic alterations in Lawrence, visit lawrenceks.org/construction.
