City announces closures and service alterations for Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday

City offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18, in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. City services, solid waste collection, and hours for parks and recreation facilities/programs will be altered as shown below:

Solid Waste: Residential trash, recycling, and yard waste collection will not be affected by the holiday closure. Commercial solid waste collection routes for Monday will also be collected on schedule.

Parking: Parking meters and lots in downtown Lawrence will be free on Monday, Jan. 18.

Transit: The Lawrence Transit System T and T Lift buses will operate regular schedules on Monday, Jan. 18. Routes 1-10, 15, 11B and 29B will be operating.

EMS: Emergency services (fire, police, EMS) will not be impacted. If you have a medical, fire or police emergency, please call 9-1-1. Law Enforcement and Fire Medical administrative offices will be closed.

Parks and Recreation: The Parks and Recreation Department’s administrative office and cemeteries office in South Park will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18.

The recreation facilities will be open at the following times:

  • Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St.  – Noon – 7 p.m.
  • Community Building, 115 W. 11th St. –10:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
  • East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St. – 9 a.m. – noon,  5 – 8 p.m.
  • Sports Pavilion Lawrence, 100 Rock Chalk Lane – 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., 4 – 8 p.m.; Registration 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be closed, as scheduled.

The Aquatic Division offices will be closed, but all aquatic classes will be held as scheduled. The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be open for the following:

  • Lap Swimming – 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
  • Warm Water Workout – 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Zero Depth and Children’s Area – Closed
  • Diving Boards and Water Slide – Closed

Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Road, will be in operation, weather permitting.

All lifelong recreational classes will be held as scheduled. Youth Sports is holding registration for youth soccer and youth recreational basketball.
